De cierta manera

Work: with a handheld 16mm camera, amateur and professional actors, as well as plenty of documentary footage of everyday life in post-revolutionary Cuba, Sara Gómez created a dynamic and complex milestone in the history of Cuban and feminist film. Different narrative voices and perspectives and the elliptical interweaving of feature film scenes with documentary sequences in particular infuse the fictional love story between the teacher Yolanda and the factory worker Mario. Pars pro toto, their unequal relationship becomes a mirror of a society in the process of social and economic transformation.

Al-Ahlam al-mumkinna

Work: The daily life of farmer Oum Said, narrated by she herself: she cooks, speaks wise words, does the accounting, takes care of the animals, educates the children and hopes that her daughters in particular will be better off. The film includes the central themes of Al-Abnoudy’s documentary cinema: the perspectives of (peasant) women, the intersections of class, labor, social justice. (Gaby Babić)

Ughniyat Touha al-hazina

Decentering/City: Al-Abnoudy’s early work is a stunning portrait of Cairo's street performers. This community's story is told through the lens of Abnoudy's unobtrusive camera, accompanied by the spare and haunting narration provided by poet Abdel Rahman El-Abnoudy. Depicting fire-eaters, child contortionists and other performers slowly taking over a small Cairene street, the documentary's dreamlike quality eerily captures the artistry displayed by this tight-knit group.
